Transition Team Speaking Notes April 6 - 7, 2019

  • In the last few years, it has been clear that although every parish has dedicated, faithful parishioners:
    • Congregations overall are declining
    • There are fewer priests and they are aging
    • As a church in total, we are more focused on survival than becoming missionary disciples
    • Our current status is not sustainable.
  • We need to move from maintenance to mission – it is time for transformational change
    • Part of Archdiocesan wide reorganization
    • Moving from 65 parishes and 25 missions to 20 parishes

  • New parishes announced January 1, 2019
  • Our new Pastor – Fr Irek Bem will start August 1, 2019
  • Transition (putting the new parishes together) must be complete by December 31, 2019

How are we going to do it?

  • Transition Team whose job is to prepare Saint Agnes Parish and Saint Thomas Aquinas Canadian Martyrs Parish for canonical merger by December 31, 2019
    • 3 parishioners from each parish
    • Fr Paul Morris
    • Deacon Dan Daley
  • Started meeting in January and meeting every two to three weeks
  • We have guidelines from the Archdiocese and they identify Goals of the Transition Team:
    • Bringing the gifts, charisms and enthusiasm, to the cause of creating a new faith community of missionary disciples
    • Exercising prayer and discernment in their decision making process
    • Ensuring that the re-organization effort is accomplished for the purpose of the Gospel
    • Developing shared moments of prayer within the grouping
    • Reviewing existing pastoral and financial operations
    • Developing a naming process for the new parish
  • Parish staff and some Committees have already started meeting together

How can you get involved?

  • First, pray:
    • For faith and trust in God and each other
    • For wisdom and guidance in discernment
    • For patience when we don’t know the answers
  • Second, there will be a new website which will be ready in time for Easter. You will be able to access it from either of the Parish websites and it will give you information on what’s happening with the Transition process and contact information for the Transition Team.
  • Third, come to the first joint Parish meeting on May 7, that’s Tuesday May 7 at the St Agnes Church Hall – coffee and snacks available at 6:30 and program start of 7 pm. It will be our first opportunity to meet each other, hear more information, ask questions, and find out how to get involved.
  • Fourth, consider what your gifts are and the time you can commit.  There is lots of work to do and we will need everyone to play a part. More on what we need at our meeting on May 7.
  • And last, pray:
    • For our world
    • For our country
    • For our Archdiocese,
    • And, for our parishes as we go forward without fear to build a new reality as missionary disciples.
I also wanted to point out that there is a message from Fr Paul in this week’s bulletin highlighting the services for the Triduum.  There are two opportunities to worship together as one parish.  So check out the bulletin!

Thanks and please come to the meeting on May 7th
